Rangiora to Hanmer Springs: The Perfect Day Trip Base

Hanmer Springs is one of the most popular day trips in the South Island, and for good reason – but here’s something a lot of visitors don’t realise: you don’t need to stay in the alpine village itself to enjoy it. Basing yourself in Rangiora puts you within easy reach of the thermal pools, without the tourist-town crowds waiting for you back at your accommodation. 

The drive 

From The Riverstone, it’s around an hour and a half up to Hanmer Springs – a straightforward, scenic drive north through the North Canterbury countryside. Easily doable as a day trip, with plenty of time to soak, explore, and still be back for dinner. And with the pools opening at 10 am, there’s no real need for a super early start… and in Amberly, Kells Kitchen and the Amberley Bakery or Culverden Bakery in that township further north are personal favourites to stop for a pie and a coffee on route!

The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa is the obvious drawcard – a series of open-air mineral pools set against a stunning backdrop of hills and forestry, perfect for unwinding after a day of travel or exploring. Beyond the pools, Hanmer has a genuinely good walking and mountain biking scene, with tracks through the forest park for all fitness levels, plus a village centre with some great shops, cafés and restaurants if you want to make a full day of it. In winter, it’s also your gateway to skiing at the nearby ski fields, and there is something quite special to be soaking in the thermal pools and looking up at the picturesque, snow-capped peaks.

• It’s quieter. Hanmer Springs gets busy, especially on weekends and school holidays – coming back to a calm, uncrowded and spotlessly clean, quiet room, after a big day makes a real difference. 

• You’re still close to everything else. Rangiora sits just 25 minutes from Christchurch Airport, so if Hanmer Springs is one stop on a bigger Canterbury trip, you’re well positioned either way. 

• Free parking, no fuss. Load up the car in the morning and head off – no city parking and congestion to navigate before you’ve even left. 

• It’s a natural stopping point. Whether you’re driving up from Christchurch or coming back down from further north, Rangiora is a comfortable place and the obvious place to break your journey.
